How to Access E-Books

To start with:

-E-books are full-length books available electronically through the catalog.

-Because of copyright restrictions you might not be able to copy, print, or save some books, but you can view them from any internet computer.

1. To find e-books, go to the Library Catalog link on our webpage.

2. Random searching will find E-books, but to specifically search just for them, use the Advanced Search

3. Change the “Limit search to” Electronic Books and type in your search (keyword, title, etc.)

4. Typing in “health” as a search (for example) brings up 313 items. Click on the title of the book you want to view.

5. Clicking on the title brings up the item record, with the URL link – click on the link

6. The new screen gives details of the book. If you want to view it, click on “View this eBook,” or you can do a text search of the book first

7. Clicking on the + sign will expand the contents list

You can also search for specific words or phrases in the book.

8. You may browse through pages or go directly to a page using the top bar

Use the tool bar to save, print, copy, or zoom in on portions of the page

How to get an item sent from another library (interlibrary loan)

1. First go to our webpage (www.saintpaul.edu/library).

2. Click on the Library Catalog under the Library Links.

3. On the search screen switch the bottom drop-down menu to "All MnPALS Libraries." Now you are searching the holdings of every library in our system, not just us.

4. Do a search, then click on the item you want.

5. Once the screen for that specific item comes up, you will notice "ILL request" at the top of the record. If you found an item you want sent, click on this.

6. The computer is going to ask for your barcode (from the back of your student photo ID) and a password (your last name). If you don't know these, you have to ask your librarian. Their is an email link on our website too.

7. Once you enter those, it will take you back to the item page. Click on "ILL request" one more time. Once you are logged in it will only ask for that login info once until you close the web browser.

8. When the ILL form pops up you will really only have to fill in two bits of information: "Not Needed After?" (put in the last day you could possible need this item) and mark the check box at the bottom. Make sure that the "Not Needed After?" date is no sooner than a week into the future. Most items come within a few days, but some take longer. If you put to soon a date (like tomorrow) that item will probably never come and get erased off the system.

9. After you complete these steps, the item will come to our library, and we will call you to pick it up.

All the Logins You Use at Saint Paul College

1) Student Email / Campus Computer Login / Wireless Access of Campus

These three things all use the same username and password. To set up an account (if you haven't already done so) go to www.saintpaul.edu/portal and click on the Create Portal Account link on the left hand side.

The typical format is last name, first initial, and two numbers for the username. The password is whatever you want. Passwords can be numbers and/or letters, but have to be at least 6 characters long.

An example for John Smith:
username: smithj00
password: whatever

2) Desire2Learn (D2L) - Online Classes

The login link for D2L can be found on the main College page, the Library page, or go directly to https://saintpaul.ims.mnscu.edu. The username is your student ID number, and the password (the first time you use it) is you birthdate in YYMMDD format.

An example for John Smith born on January 8, 1990:
username: 00012345
password: 900108

The first time you login you will be asked to change your password. You can change it to whatever you want.

3) Student Accounts - Class Registration, Check Your Grades, Tuition Balance, Add/Drop Classes

This is available from the College pages, or go directly to https://webproc.mnscu.edu/eservices/login.html?campusid=206. Your username is your Student ID number. Your PIN/Password is a 6 digit number that is your birthdate in YYMMDD format the first time you login.

An example for John Smith born on January 8, 1990:
username: 00012345
password: 900108

The first time you login, you are asked to change your PIN, but you can only change it to another 6-digit number without any zeroes. If you ever forget what your PIN is, you can only go to Student Records, room 155j, to find out what it is.

4) Your Library Account - Interlibrary Loans, Logging Onto Databases From Off-Campus

To get to the Library Catalog, you can go to the link from the Library's page, or you can go directly to http://saintpaul.mnpals.net. by clicking on your Borrowing Record at the top, you can see what you have checked out, when your items are due, and you can renew them online.

To get items from other libraries (interlibrary loan) you will be asked for the same information. Your username is the barcode from the back of your student photo ID, and your password is your last name.

Example:
username: 20409001234567
password: smith

If you use any of the Library databases from off campus that require the "remote" login, you will use the same username (your barcode) and password (your last name).

If you have not gotten your student photo ID yet, the only way to know your barcode is to contact the Librarian from the top of any of the database pages. However, to confirm your identity, barcodes will only be sent to student email, or given out in person with another form of ID.
